Names That Cannot Be Used
For all the many variations in names that Clan cats, rogues, loners, and kittypets can have, there are types of names that are not appropriate for characters in a Warriors-based roleplay.
Names are very important in the Warriors series, which is why a lot of weight rests on the name chosen for your character.
The following post consists of names and categories of names that are not permitted for use in Clan cats, rogues, loners, and kittypets, and goes for clan suffixes and prefixes, as well as singular rogue, kittypet, and loner names.
The examples are but a small selection of names in the categories, and include any and all names that fit the category they represent.
All names not represented on the Approved Names list are not permissable, regardless of whether or not they appear on this thread.
Table of Contents:
*** Introduction.
*** Mythical Beings
*** Non-Native Species.
*** Unfamiliar Territory.
*** Precious Stones, Jewels, and Minerals.
*** Celestial Bodies.
*** Intangibles and Feelings.
*** "Thesaurus-Roleplay" Names.
*** "Good" and "Evil".
*** Unlisted names.
*** Introduction:
As stated above, names are very important in the warriors series. As such, your cat character's name should fit that of the Warriors canon.
To create a proper name for your character, it's a good idea to look at the Naming thread first, to see what -is- permitted, after reading through this one.
*** Mythical Beings:
In "Warriors", the cats' idea of mythical beings are the Great Cats - Lions, Tigers, and Leopards. Mythical creatures revered and feared by humans would be unbeknownst to cats, so cannot be used as cat names.
Examples of names in this category:
Angel, Dragon, Phoenix, Kelpie, Gryphon, Unicorn, Pegasus, Hippogriff, Kappa, Roc, Basilisk, Wyvern, Hydra, Kraken, Siren, Scylla, etcetera.
*** Non-Native/Uncommon Native Species:
The Warriors series is set in the United Kingdom, and animals and plants encountered by the warrior cats in the novels are all flora and fauna native to the U.K. As the names of cats reflect their surroundings, the cats won't have names of animals and plants that they have never come across. The exceptions to this are the three Great Cats in their lore (Tiger, Lion, and Leopard).
Examples of Names in this Category:
Cheetah, Puma, Bobcat, Lynx, Wolf, Coyote, Bear, Kangaroo, Kiwi, Boar, Panda, Penguin, Moose, Cougar, Whale, Beaver, Salmon, Sakura, Lotus, Acacia, etc.
*** Unfamiliar Territory
As mentioned above, the Warriors series takes place in the U.K., and cats as cats are named for their environment, the names are based on the flora and fauna of that region.
The cats would be unfamiliar with distant territories in other countries, so naturally their names would not mention geographical terms that are Twoleg specific, or something they are unfamiliar with.
Examples of Names in this Category:
Arctic, Taiga, Tundra, Desert, Plains, Steppe, Alps, Prairie, Polar, Glacial, Glacier, Tropical, Savanna, Siberian, etc.
*** Precious Stones, Jewels, and Minerals:
Precious stones, jewels, and the like are materials that are precious to Twolegs. Indeed, clan cats as well as rogues and loners would never come into contact with these, and they certainly would not know of the names Twolegs give these objects.
** Gold (in the form of "golden") and Silver have been used in the series and they are the only "mineral"-related names that can be used for cats. However, these two names are used to describe color; the cats are not named for the mineral itself.
** Kittypets, as they are named by Twolegs, are permitted to have a name in this category.
Examples Of Names In This Category:
Emerald, Diamond, Ruby, Onyx, Aquamarine, Crystal, Ebony, etc.
*** Celestial Bodies:
Aside from the Leader's suffix of -star, and the two celestial bodies that clan cats can see (the sun and the moon), celestial bodies cannot be used as names. This includes planets, solar systems, constellations, etc.
These are cats, and last time I checked, cats do not have access to telescopes, and have never taken a course in Astronomy.
Sun and Moon are to be used in special instances, for characters that are leaders and medicine cats only. The reason for this is that the sun and the moon are revered by the cats (especially the moon) as much as they revere the Three Great Cats, and in the series, Sun- and Moon- have only been used for the great cats of the past.
Examples of Names in this Category:
Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto, Orion, Rigel, Comet, Luna/Lunar, Solar, Mars, etc.
*** Intangibles and Feelings
This refers to very Twoleg-descriptions of things in the Twoleg world., as well as their emotions.
"Dream-" is a prefix that has been used in the warriors series, so that is an exception.
"-wish" is a suffix given by the Warriors WEBSITE, so it is also an exception.
Examples of Names in this Category:
Love, Hate, Brood, Mean, Destiny, Desire, Lust, Sin, Greed, Envy, Divine, Passion, etc.
*** "Thesaurus" Roleplay-Names
Most experienced roleplayers have had a run-in with a thesaurus roleplayer. Some who may be reading this may have even participated. Cats are unable to read a thesaurus, so "fancy" sounding words cannot be used for cat names.
These may be descriptive adjectives, "fancy" sounding nouns, a descriptve verb, or something otherwise that is common in certain wolf "roleplays".
This category also includes thesaurus synonyms of acceptable clan names.
Examples of Names in this Category:
Bliss, Exultation, Misery, Vivacity, Delirium, Gloom, Frenzy, Euphoria, Piceous, Atramentous, Livid, Swarthy, Sombre, Ebon, Optics, Auds, Brunet, Brunette, Rapture, Obsidian, Plague, Rancorous, Vile, Wicked, Baneful, Depraved, Corrupt , Achromic, Alabaster, Pallid, Wan, Sienna, Ecru, Adobe, Henna, Khaki, Puce, Umber, Scintillation, Radiance, etc - the list goes on.
*** "Good" and "Evil"
As cool and bad-ass as an "evil" or "angelic" sounding name may be in other roleplays, Twoleg familiar names such as these cannot be used when naming cats.
* An exception is for kittypets, but even then, the name must be Twoleg appropriate - something that you or I would name our pet cat.
And - what mother cat would name her kit "Doomkit" or "Evilkit" or "pregnant dogkit", anyhow?
Examples of Names In This Category:
Doom, Blood, Killer, Sadist, Death, Bane, Ninja, Evil, pregnant dog, Beast, Rogue, Ogre, Demon, Satan, Mephisto, Diablo, Fiend, Wicked, Angel, Cherub, etc.
*** Unlisted Names.
Of course, it is impossible to list every unacceptable combination of names. If there is a question about your name, it is, more often than not, unable to be used. If you have any doubts about a name, consult the Clan and Non-Clan name pages to see what type of names are acceptable for cats.
