History
Roughly a thousand years or so ago, four friends; Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin came together and founded the school of Hogwarts. Godric and Salazar were close partners in magic as were Rowena and Helga.
Each had their own view points, personalities and qualities so to avoid arguments they agreed on splitting the school into four houses, each named after a founder. The houses were to work closely together with Gryffindor's group as a brave selection, Hufflepuff's a loyal one, Ravenclaw's a clever and witty one and Slytherin's as a pureblood orientated, cunning group.
Slytherin's ideals about the purebloods had a rub-off effect on the students and the houses started distancing themselves from one another and this soon had the founders arguing. Slytherin eventualy left the school, leaving the remaining founders with no way to sort his house members and thus the sorting hat was born of Gryffindors old pointed hat. The sorting hat was to start each school year with a song, delve into the minds of new students and sort them into the correct houses.
